Most parties run on a kit — a booklet, character sheets, and a schedule of clue drops — so no one has to write the story themselves. Your job as host is to set the stage and keep the pace moving.
Step 1: Pick your format
Three options, from lowest to highest lift:

- A hosted or delivered experience. Someone else handles the story arc, props, and pacing. You show up.

Step 2: Set your guest count and theme
Most kits run 6 to 12 players. Under 6 and the mystery thins out. Over 12 and it's hard to hear each other.
Pick a theme your friends will actually dress for. 1920s speakeasy, Hollywood premiere, cruise ship, small-town diner — go where the costumes are easy and cheap.
Step 3: Send invites early
Two to three weeks out. Include:
- Date, time, and address
- The character each guest is playing
- A one-line costume hint ("think 1920s newspaper reporter")
- Any dietary asks
Assign characters based on who you know. Give the biggest personality the biggest role.
Step 4: Prep the space
You need three things:
- A table everyone can sit at (or clusters they can rotate through)
- Enough light to read character notes
- A quiet-enough room that people can hear whispered secrets
Add a couple of themed props — a fake newspaper, a name card at each seat, a suspicious envelope on the mantel. That's plenty. You don't need a movie set.
Step 5: Plan food you don't have to cook during the party
The murder happens during dinner. You cannot be in the kitchen. Options that work:
- A charcuterie or grazing spread
- A slow cooker main plus sides prepped the day before
- Order-in that arrives 30 minutes before guests
Drinks in pitchers, not cocktails to order.
Step 6: Run the night

- Round one: the murder happens (30 min).
- Round two: first clues drop (45 min).
- Round three: accusations (30 min).

Step 7: Land the reveal
The reveal is the whole point of the night. Read it out loud. Let the killer confess in character. Take a photo. Then dessert.

How many people do I need?
Six is the practical minimum. Eight to ten is the sweet spot. Above twelve, the group splits into side conversations and the story gets hard to follow.
Do guests have to memorize lines?
No. Every kit gives each character a booklet of talking points, secrets, and prompts. Guests read and improvise — no memorization.
What if a guest cancels last minute?
Pick a "flex" character in advance — one whose backstory can be quietly cut without breaking the mystery — and be ready to redistribute one or two clues. Good kits mark which characters are safe to drop.
